Cape Neddick Nubble Light, in York, Maine is planted on a small rocky island that is 'so close yet so far' from the shore divided by a 100 foot channel. The vivid contrasting autumn light and shadows delivered the depth and dimension for the rock foundation I was seeking, but I added a soft delicate blueish shadow on the tower and the keeper's house. Three seagulls sat immovable atop the red brick oil house so I felt obliged to use them in my composition. My wife Erin chuckled as I recounted the true story of the keeper's cat "Mr T". In the 1930's, the cat would regularly swim and ride a wave to shore to hunt for mice in the nearby rocks. To create a further sense of distance, I used a quaint green-tinted sky along with high- altitude streaking clouds to complete the background.
